Katherine Solomon Escapes Mal’akh’s Attack in the Lab
The Lost SymbolKatherine Solomon Escapes Mal’akh’s Attack in the Lab is the sequence in which a warning about Peter Solomon’s abduction becomes an immediate threat to Katherine herself. Trapped in the darkness of Pod Five at the Smithsonian Museum Support Center, she pieces together what has happened, evades an attacker, and escapes by exploiting the building’s enormous specimen bay and its motion-activated lights. Her flight ends with a revelation: the attacker is the man who killed her mother.
Warning and Recognition of the Threat
Robert Langdon tells Katherine that Peter has been taken captive and warns her that the message she received from Peter’s phone did not come from her brother. Katherine had believed Peter was on his way to the lab because a text said so; Langdon explains that the sender is dangerous and that the invitation to bring Dr. Abaddon inside is part of the deception. By then, Katherine’s assistant, Trish Dunne, has gone to meet the guest.
Katherine calls the security guard and asks him to locate Trish on the surveillance recordings. The replay shows Trish escorting the guest through Wet Pod and using her key card to let him in. The guest emerges alone, while Trish is nowhere to be seen. The guard notices that the man’s sleeves are wet up to the elbows, and then sees him proceed toward Pod Five carrying what appears to be a key card. The footage converts Katherine’s suspicion into an urgent practical problem: the man is moving through the facility, and Trish has been left behind.
Katherine is already running through the dark corridor when the guard clarifies that he is watching recorded footage, not events as they unfold. The replay shows the guest entering Pod Five about ninety seconds earlier, using Trish’s key card. Katherine stops, understands that the intruder is inside the dark space with her, and asks the guard to send help and go to Wet Pod for Trish. She closes her phone to extinguish its light, leaving herself without a visible guide or a reliable sense of direction.
A Pursuit in Pod Five
Katherine remains still and quiet as the intruder approaches. She detects him nearby, steps off the carpet, and tries to move away from its path. When the sound of her foot betrays her, he lunges and catches her lab coat. She slips out of it and runs, now unable to tell which way leads out. In the struggle that follows, she places her open phone on a waist-high metal strut; the attacker later pulls himself up beside the wall where she left it.
Feeling her way along Pod Five’s wall, Katherine uses the regularly spaced metal studs to keep moving. Their pattern breaks at a smooth panel. She realizes that it is the specimen bay, a giant movable wall designed to bring oversized specimens into and out of the pod. Nearby, the guard’s flashlight strikes the door as he tries to reach her, but he cannot get inside. The sound helps her orient herself, and the specimen bay offers another possible exit.
Katherine finds the bay’s handle, but the panel will not move. Searching its surface, she discovers a vertical security rod set into the floor. She lifts it out of its hole and tries the handle again. This time the immense panel shifts, admitting a narrow strip of moonlight. She widens the opening enough to squeeze through. The attacker reaches after her from inside, but she gets out and runs along the building’s exterior toward the main entrance.
Turning the Facility Against Her Attacker
Katherine recognizes that she cannot reach the entrance or her Volvo before the pursuer catches up. Near the corner of Pod Five, she changes direction, runs out onto the lawn, and shuts her eyes as she crosses it. The motion-activated security lights blaze on. Because the attacker’s pupils have adjusted to the dark, the sudden brightness disrupts his pursuit; Katherine hears him falter while she continues across the grass with her eyes closed.
Once she is clear of the lights, Katherine opens her eyes, finds her way to her Volvo, and starts it. The headlights reveal the pursuer: a bald, bare-chested man whose skin is covered with tattoos, symbols, and text. He reaches the car and breaks through a side window, briefly restraining her as she tries to get away. The encounter has moved from an unseen danger in the laboratory to a direct confrontation in the vehicle’s headlights.
The Identity of the Attacker and the Escape
The attacker tells Katherine that he killed her mother ten years earlier. His face, partly uncovered where his disguise has been torn, confirms what his words suggest. Katherine recognizes him as the man from the night her mother died. Until this moment, the pursuit has been a struggle to escape an unknown intruder; the recognition gives it a personal history and identifies the threat as Mal’akh.
Katherine throws the Volvo into reverse and accelerates, dragging the attacker alongside the car until the vehicle forces its way through the evergreens and into an upper parking lot. He gets to his feet and points at her, but she turns the wheel and drives off. She reaches Silver Hill Road, having escaped the facility and the man whose connection to her family has now been exposed. Trish’s whereabouts remain unresolved within this sequence: the guard has been asked to help her, but Katherine’s escape provides no confirmation of what happened in Wet Pod.
